Finding Your True Identity and Purpose

In a world of “blended reality” where truth and fiction are increasingly difficult to tell apart, Dr. Corbin Hoornbeek brings a grounding message from Ephesians 1:3–14. Drawing from Paul’s sweeping vision of God’s eternal plan, this sermon answers three of the most fundamental questions of human life: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? The answer, Paul argues, is not found in DNA, personal achievement, or simply “enjoying the passage of time” — but in a God who imagined, redeemed, and secured each of us before the dawn of creation.

The Core Questions

Why is it so hard to know who I really am?

Dr. Hoornbeek explains that when a society loses its “unifying understanding of reality” — one anchored in the truth that we are created by God and in his image — identity becomes fragile and dislocated. Without that foundation, people fill the void with personal achievement, cultural identity, or as podcaster Stephen Bartlett put it, simply “enjoying the passage of time.” Dr. Hoornbeek argues that if our origin is insignificant, we have no honest alternative but to admit our lives are also insignificant — and that is an unsatisfying place to land.

Does God actually have a plan for my life?

According to Dr. Hoornbeek’s reading of Ephesians 1:11, God not only has a plan — he executes it and completes it. Paul uses language of certainty throughout this passage: chosen, predestined, sealed, guaranteed. Dr. Hoornbeek puts it plainly: God is 100% in control of every detail of your life. That doesn’t mean life is painless, but it does mean there are no loose ends, no wrong turns, and no incomplete chapters in God’s design for you.

What does it mean to “come home” to God?

Dr. Hoornbeek draws on his own experience of losing the sense of home when his parents’ marriage ended during his college years. He uses that loss as a picture of what sin does to all of us — it disconnects us from our true origin and the relationship we were made for. Coming home, in Paul’s language, means being restored and reunited with God through Christ: recreated in his image, forgiven of sin past, present, and future, and secured in perfect relationship with him forever.

Foundational Text: Ephesians 1:3–14

Main Anchor Verse:

Reflection

If you have been feeling discouraged, disappointed, or like you have been drifting from your purpose, Dr. Hoornbeek’s closing invitation is simple: come home. In Christ, the penalty for sin has been paid in full — past, present, and future. You were imagined by God, designed in his image, and your destiny is secured in perfect relationship with him forever.
