The Danger of a Short Memory: What the Golden Calf Teaches Us About Forgetting God’s Faithfulness

The Heart of the Message

It is remarkable how quickly people can forget the biggest moments of rescue in their lives. In this sermon, Pastor Kirt Anderson walks through Exodus 32, the story of the golden calf, to show how easily the people of Israel turned away from God only months after he had parted the sea for them. It is a message about memory, worship, and why the church still matters today.

Why Do We Forget God’s Faithfulness So Quickly?

Pastor Kirt points out that huge, miraculous events in our lives can be quickly forgotten, especially if we never fully recognized them to begin with. He notes that we tend to remember pain and hurt far more easily than we remember blessing, which is part of why the Israelites grumbled and turned to an idol just months after their deliverance from Egypt. Sometimes, he says, we simply need eyes to see what God has already done for us.

What Does the Story of the Golden Calf Actually Teach Us?

According to Pastor Kirt, when Moses delayed on the mountain, the people pressured Aaron into building a golden calf, and Aaron caved almost immediately. He draws a direct connection to Genesis 3, noting that Aaron’s compliance mirrors Adam simply taking the fruit from Eve without resistance. The deeper problem, Pastor Kirt explains, is that the people were not freed from Egypt for freedom’s own sake but so they could worship the one true God, and instead they began imitating the very practices of Egypt they had just escaped.

Why Do Some Churches Close While Others Are Being Built?

Pastor Kirt shares that he has been asked why the congregation would build a new church building when so many churches are closing their doors, and his answer is that they are building because churches are closing. He points to the decline of a historic Southern California congregation he grew up attending, once home to thousands of worshippers, and attributes that decline to churches drifting from the clear teaching of scripture and reflecting the surrounding culture instead. His conclusion is that the gospel itself, not cultural trends, is what has sustained the church for over two thousand years.

Scripture Focus

Primary Text: Exodus 32:1-10

“When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. ‘Come on,’ they said, ‘make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses who brought us here from the land of Egypt.’ So Aaron said, ‘Take the gold rings from your ears, ears of your wives, the sons, your sons and daughters, and bring them to me.’ All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. And Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, ‘O Israel, these are the gods who brought us out of the land of Egypt.’ Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, ‘Tomorrow will be a feast to the Lord.’ People got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and burnt peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking and indulged in pagan revelry. The Lord God told Moses, ‘Quick, go down the mountain, your people whom you brought from the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves, how quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live. They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down to and sacrificed to it, they are saying, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” Then the Lord said, “I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are, now leave me alone, so my fierce anger can blaze against them, and I will destroy them, and I will make Moses into a great nation.”‘”
