Why did God lead Israel toward the sea instead of an easier way out?
Pastor Kirt points out that God did not direct the Israelites along the easier coastal route. He led them right to the shores of the sea, a place where they would be hemmed in with nowhere left to run. It was there, with no options of their own left, that the pillar of cloud and fire moved behind them and God fought on their behalf.
Is any form of slavery acceptable to God?
Pastor Kirt is direct on this point: no person has the right to own another person, under any circumstances. He notes that even ancient thinkers like Aristotle and Plato believed some people were simply suited for slavery, but Scripture teaches something different. God’s will, as shown throughout this story, is that His people be free.
What does it mean to be a slave to sin versus a slave to righteousness?
Drawing from the apostle Paul, Pastor Kirt explains that everyone serves somebody. We are either slaves to sin, which leads to death, or we choose to obey God, which leads to a righteous life. He frames it simply: because of the cross and resurrection of Jesus, we are set free from slavery to sin and become, instead, devoted to righteous living.
Pastor Kirt also shared a personal story from his own life, a painful season 20 years ago when he was removed from a church he had helped build, with no chance to say goodbye to the people he loved. He described it as his own wilderness experience, one that eventually led to the small gathering that became Naples Community Church. As the church now looks toward a new building, he framed this season as a “land of promise,” a next step in a story of God’s faithfulness over the last 20 years.
